Catholic Worship in the Age of Non-Denominational Spectacle

My son was recently invited to a social event occurring at a non-denominational “megachurch.” While he declined, his invitation prompted questions from my children about the beliefs and practices held by the multitudes of non-denominational congregations surrounding our town. It certainly feels like a growing number of friends and colleagues are drawn to their emotionally-engaging experiences, bustling coffee bars, and professional-level worship bands and lighting.

It’s understandable for Catholics to notice the proliferation of these “churches” with a mixture of curiosity as well as consternation about our own practices. Why do our services feel quieter, slower, and less emotionally stimulating by comparison? Why don’t Catholic churches adopt techniques that have seemingly made many non-denominational churches attractive?

Beneath these questions is a deep and immutable truth that modern neuroscience helps us appreciate: Catholic worship is not designed to manufacture emotional intensity. Its unique and enduring aim is lasting formation.
